Well, I’m back in America, the land I love, and the city that made me, New York. After 48 hours of near continuous travel by boat, car, and plane, I’ve made it home to Brooklyn. Over the last five months I’ve been to Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Bangkok, and Railay Beach in southern Thailand. For someone who has never left the USA before, and never really planned to, it was an eye opening experience. I found people in the Australasia region to be both extremely warm and friendly, and positive to Americans especially because they love Barrack Obama. Thanks Mr. President for making Americans cool again overseas. I’ve also arrived just in time for the American Spring, which will lead right into summer, giving me 3 summers in a row, suck it winter. I’ve only been in New York for 24 hours, but I’m already looking for a new apartment, been invited to a musical, and eaten the most delicious NYC bagel I’ve ever had. To celebrate even further, I’m posting John Lennon’s performance of “New York City,” from his fabled Madison Square Concert live performance. I’ve already linked to performances of “Come Together,” “Mother,” and “Cold Turkey,” from the same concert, so it doesn’t hurt to keep globbing on more of the same Lennony goodness. Anyway, it’s good to be back, and it’s good to be home, and I look forward to resuming my daily activities of providing you with the best rock and roll music in the world.

In my last Sex Pistols post, it was Glen Matlock in the promo vid for “Anarchy in the UK.” It’s probably not Sid playing bass on the actual track, but its cool to see the icon of the group thrashing about in this historic clip. I’ve been staying in Australia for the last few weeks, and I recently got a coin in my change honoring the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton. It was kind of horrifying that such a thing is stamped on the official currency, so I had to put up “God Save the Queen,” in honor of such a revolting display of unearned honor. The song itself is fairly revolutionary, released in 1977, the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee. Johnny Rotten claimed the song was written out of love for the English people’s working class, deriding the monarchy as fascist, and proclaiming that England has no future. It’s actually a complex idea about class warfare presented in the awesome straightforward punk rock format. The song is filled with delicious riffs, and a perfect acid tipped vocal delivery from Rotten. A true classic, enjoy.
John Lennon, India, India

I’ve got three weeks in beautiful Portland before I head across the world to South Korea and Australia. I’m happy to be out of the city and hear crickets out my window, as four and a half years in New York really drains the nature out of you. I couldn’t be more excited for my trip across the Pacific, and I’m reminded of four other guys who had to get away from it all, the fab four. The rare song you are about to hear was NOT recorded by the Beatles, but rather its a solo John number from 1980 that he made reflecting on the journey he took just 12 years prior. John was beginning to feel sentimental about his life, emotions reflected strongly in his last record Double Fantasy. “India, India” didn’t survive the cutting room floor of that record, but luckily it survives the cutting room floor of history. It’s a pretty psychedelic folk ballad with a wistful haunting melody. Enjoy.
The Strokes, Last Nite

I crossed the Williamsburg Bridge on foot for the first time, explored Greenpoint, went to a great BBQ in Sheepshead Bay, got free tickets to the Museum of Natural History, hung out in Chinatown eating at the legendary Wo-Hop, and had a Belgium Chocolate milkshake at Haagen Dazs. Basically, I was all over New York City, taking in the city I love before I depart for South Korea and Australia next month. One great thing about this city is its history of rock and roll music, and no band in recent memory has blazed the torch for New York cool more than the Strokes. At once both declared the saviors of rock and roll, and everything wrong with it, the Strokes have persisted for ten years now. Coming out right after 9/11, the Strokes rock harder than ever, at least they do live, and it all started with their debut single, “Last Nite.” When this single came out, I was 17 years old, starving for a new rock band to break into the pop scene and change the awful commercial images that dominated the depleted American cultural landscape at the time. A lot of people would argue that the Strokes were depleted themselves, merely presenting a retread of the early 80s post punk rock movement, but I didn’t subscribe to that theory. I saw them for what they were, rock stars writing catchy, exciting, and tasteful songs. They were cool, and they still are. The Kinks, Australia

That’s right, come October, I’m packing my life up, grabbing a friend, and taking a 21 hour flight overseas to the land down under. Actually, I’m headed to South Korea for a week first, and then off to the land of kangaroos. Don’t worry, it’s only for a year at most, and the website won’t change one bit, except for what time in the day I update it. Anyway, in honor of this historic event in the life of Willie Simpson, I present you “Australia,” a track from one of my favorite albums of all time Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire.) This song, from the Kinks’ best album, was the longest cut, and is like some hilarious sardonic commercial for moving to the continent. Thematically, the song is part of the album’s concept about an idealistic British man named Arthur who is a World War I vet who tries to live the British dream, but can’t find real satisfaction because of the hollowness of such pursuits. It’s a great groovy 60s song that blends satire, psychedelia, hard rock, and piano pop. In honor of the this occasion, I’m gonna post as much as I can from Arthur for the rest of the week, assuming youtube is chalk full of videos.
